VISIT OUR HISTORIC SITES OF REMEMBRANCE DISCOVER CEMETERIES AND MEMORIALS ACROSS CENTRAL ENGLAND CHESTER (BLACON) CEMETERY Located near the busy port of Liverpool and several Royal Air Force bases, during the Second World War (1939- 45) over 550 service burials were made here, most in two designated War Graves plots. Alongside the Commonwealth headstones you will see those of Dutch, Polish, Russian, Italian and German servicemen. Blacon Avenue, Blacon, Chester, CH1 5BB CANNOCK CHASE WAR CEMETERY 1 CENTRAL ENGLAND 1 2 3 4 5 3 4 COTTESMORE (ST NICHOLAS) CHURCHYARD In March 1938, the Royal Air Force established an airfield and training centre at Cottesmore and space in this churchyard was put aside for military burials. In 1939, Britain went to war. By the end of the conflict 88 Commonwealth servicemen had been laid at rest here. Their average age is just 22. 41 Main Street, Cottesmore, Oakham, LE15 7DH SCAMPTON (ST JOHN THE BAPTIST) CHURCHYARD Located beside RAF Scampton, today the home of the Red Arrows, Scampton (St. John) Churchyard was used for burial of aircrew who died during the Second World War. Today, more than 60 Commonwealth and nine German servicemen lie at rest here. High Street, Scampton, Lincoln, LN1 2SE During the First World War, Cannock Chase was an important military hub and was home to bustling military camps, hospitals, and training areas. 400 British, New Zealand and German soldiers who died while serving or imprisoned here were laid to rest in this cemetery. Located nearby is Cannock Chase German War Cemetery. Established in the 1960’s, it is the largest German military cemetery in the United Kingdom with over 5,000 burials. Brocton, Cannock, WS12 4PS 2 5 NEWARK-UPON-TRENT CEMETERY This large civilian cemetery was opened in 1856 and during the First World War nearly 50 service personnel were laid to rest here by loved ones who lived locally. During the Second World War Polish aircrews flew from Royal Air Forces bases which were established across this region and today more than 400 Polish servicemen are buried in a dedicated war graves section.
