EAST CENTRAL VISIT OUR HISTORIC SITES OF REMEMBRANCE DISCOVER CEMETERIES AND MEMORIALS ACROSS EASTERN ENGLAND HATFIELD PARK WAR CEMETERY Upon the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, a military hospital was established at Hatfield House in Hertfordshire. A small section of the estate was enclosed and used as a cemetery for the burial of those who succumbed to illness, wounds, and injury. Today, Hatfield Park War Cemetery contains 20 graves from the Second World War. Visitors should go to Hatfield House visitors’ car park. Many of the First World War servicemen here died in military hospitals located nearby, while most of the burials of the Second World War are of airmen who served at the airbases that were established across the region. Earlham Road, Norwich, NR2 3RG WALTON-ON-THE-NAZE (ALL SAINTS) CHURCHYARD EXTENSION During the First World War, Harwich Harbour was a hub for Royal Navy ships on the east coast, and a Voluntary Aid Detachment convalescent home was established here. Today, this idyllic Churchyard is the final resting place of 21 First World War servicemen. Many of the graves here are marked with distinctive Admiralty crosses. CAMBRIDGE CITY CEMETERY The Memorial Gardens, Walton-on-the-Naze, CO14 8LR The city of Cambridge was home to many hospitals throughout the First World War (1914-18), while during the Second World War (1939-45), airbases were established across the entire region. Visitors to this cemetery will find five separate plots where 180 First World War and 800 Second World War service personnel lie at rest.
