VISIT OUR HISTORIC SITES OF REMEMBRANCE DISCOVER CEMETERIES AND MEMORIALS ACROSS NORTHERN ENGLAND BARROW-IN-FURNESS (THORNCLIFFE) CEMETERY Opened in 1873, this is the final resting place of almost 200 service personnel. Throughout both World Wars, Barrow-in- Furness was a vital hub of manufacturing for the armed forces. Many service personnel were based here to garrison the defences of the town, and some of those who died were laid to rest here. Others buried here had local connections to Barrow. Devonshire Road, Barrow-in-Furness, LA14 5PD THE LIVERPOOL NAVAL MEMORIAL Standing proudly on the banks of the Mersey in central Liverpool, this memorial commemorates over 1,400 men of the Merchant Navy. These service personnel died while serving with the Royal Navy during the Second World War (1939-45) and have no known grave but the sea. George’s Pierhead, Liverpool, L3 1BY 2 1 NORTHERN ENGLAND 3 1 4 2 5 3 4 5 CARLISLE (DALSTON ROAD) CEMETERY Over 270 Commonwealth servicemen and women of both World Wars are buried in this cemetery. Many were laid to rest here by their loved ones who lived locally, but others died in military hospitals established in Carlisle or during training at the nearby airbase at Crosby-on-Eden. You will also find several graves of Polish, German, and Italian soldiers and airmen here. Dalston Road, Carlisle, CA2 6AT HARROGATE (STONEFALL) CEMETERY This beautiful cemetery was begun in 1914, and a handful of First World War (1914-18) servicemen were laid to rest here by local families. During the Second World War (1939-45), Bomber Command airfields were established across Yorkshire. Today, you will find over 900 service personnel at rest in a special war graves section of the cemetery, many of whom flew with the Royal Canadian Air Force. Wetherby Road, Harrogate, HG3 1DE HULL NORTHERN CEMETERY Hull Northern Cemetery is the final resting place of more than 400 servicemen and women. As one of the largest ports in the North of England, Hull was a vital hub of military activity throughout both World Wars.
