WARTIME MALTA 2 3 CEMETERY INFORMATION During the First World War Malta was a vital base of operations and a medical hub which treated wounded soldiers brought here from across the Mediterranean. Malta was besieged for more than two years during the Second World War. More bombs were dropped on the island than on London during the Blitz. In recognition of their bravery and suffering, the people of Malta were awarded the George Cross. CWGC COMMEMORATES MANY INDIVIDUALS AT FOURTEEN SITES ACROSS THE ISLAND. Cemeteries in Malta are a uniquely beautiful and poignant mix of Commonwealth war graves (as well as burials from many other nations) and striking private headstones. With shallow earth and hard rock underneath, most burials are marked by fl at headstones bearing many names, so CWGC graves here look very different to those in other parts of the world. 1 1 3 IMTARFA MILITARY CEMETERY HEMSIJA MILITARY CEMETERY Triq Buqana, Imtarfa In the shadow of the ancient city of Mdina lies this beautiful, tranquil cemetery steeped in history. With over 1,400 civilian and military graves, some of the headstones bear bullet damage, serving as a reminder of Malta’s suffering and resilience during the Second World War. MALTA (CAPUCCINI) NAVAL CEMETERY KALKARA MILITARY CEMETERY Triq Santa Rokku, Kalkara Through the beautiful stone arch lies one of the most moving cemeteries in Malta and the fi nal resting place of over 1,000 casualties from the two World Wars, as well as many civilian memorials. PIETA MILITARY CEMETERY Triq id-Duluri, Pieta (Our Lady of Sorrows Street, Pieta) Over 1,400 servicemen are buried here. Many of those commemorated were from the Gallipoli campaign of 1915– 1916. The memorial wall bears the names of casualties from what is now India, Pakistan and Nepal, as well as members of the Gurkha regiments. MALTA MEMORIAL Ir-Re Dwardu VII, Floriana, Valetta Unveiled by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1954, this memorial to the missing commemorates almost 2,300 airmen of the British and Commonwealth Air Forces with no known grave. 2 4 Japanese Memorial Nestled between the trees you will fi nd the Japanese Memorial.
