By the end of the first day they had secured a foothold in Europe on the Normandy coast and they would soon begin their advance inland. More than 22,000 Commonwealth service personnel are commemorated by the CWGC in Normandy. We maintain 18 cemeteries across the region, and each gives an insight into the progress of the fighting in the months after D-Day and the immense human cost of the battle to Liberate Europe.
