VISIT OUR HISTORIC SITES OF REMEMBRANCE DISCOVER CEMETERIES AND MEMORIALS ACROSS SOUTH WEST ENGLAND SOUTH WEST ENGLAND WILTSHIRE EXETER HIGHER CEMETERY FALMOUTH CEMETERY Located on the south-western tip of England, Falmouth was an important Royal Navy and Royal Naval Air Service base during both World Wars. During the Second World War, the famous Operation Chariot commando raid on the docks at St. Nazaire was launched from here. Today, Falmouth Cemetery is the final resting place of almost 180 service personnel, including several who died during the St. Nazaire raid. 1 CORNWALL 2 3 DEVON 4 SOMERSET 5 DORSET 4 During the World Wars, more than 400 service personnel were buried here. Many had local connections to Exeter, while others died in one of the military hospitals established in the city. You will also find a small plot here that contains the graves of 30 German servicemen, almost all of whom were airmen who were shot down over Exeter during the Second World War (1939-45). St Marks Avenue, Exeter, EX1 2PX 39 Ferndale Road, Falmouth, TR11 4HU 1 PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL This is one of three great naval memorials built by the CWGC in the United Kingdom to commemorate the missing of the Royal Navy from the two World Wars. Over 23,000 service personnel who have no known grave but the sea are commemorated at Plymouth. Hoe Promenade, Plymouth, PL1 2PU 2 PLYMOUTH (EFFORD) CEMETERY Plymouth has been a major hub for the Royal Navy for hundreds of years. Opened in 1907, Efford Cemetery was used for service burials throughout both World Wars. Today, you will find 450 war graves here. Some casualties had loved ones who lived locally, while others lie far from their homes of Australia, Canada, South Africa and beyond. Efford Road, Plymouth, PL3 6NG 3 5 SUTTON VENY (ST. JOHN) CHURCHYARD Located near Salisbury Plain (which was a key military training ground from the late 1800s), Sutton Veny and the surrounding area housed several large military camps during the First World War (1914-18).
